Word is after nearly 20 years the last issue of Straight no Chaser magazine hits the streets in August.
The last issue will probably be a special one. Check below on how you can be part of it.
I lifted this from the Brownswood site:
One thing I wanted to let Brownswood know about first is that I've suggested that there's a couple of pages for readers to give messages to chaser. As Paul's got bills to pay, they'll cost. But it's going to be a part of history. It'll be the last one. Like the first, I'm sure this will be a serious collectors' item. I for one will want to be a part of this, and have my say.
This is going to go live on Monday. From then you can send an email with the text that you want to info@straightnochaser.co.uk and in the subject put "ATTN: BIG UP!"
The prices are super reasonable too. They're going to be done in 20 word blocks (each block costing £15 - so £15 for up to 20, £30 for 20 to 40 etc...). I don't think he'll sell more than 3 blocks to one person though, as he wants to get as many messages on the pages as possible.

after all these years! this is a hard blow. but they got lots of advertising and were supposedly selling. can't figure what's gone wrong.
this is sad news. it was my favourite mag and has been for years and years. |

yes, but as a subscriber I always get it three weeks after the new issue hits the shops... reviews and adds are pointless by then. still a great looking mag and a shame it will disappear. |

Perhaps an online magazine could arise, here's hoping - bugs me that small music magazines ae disappearing while the crummy large ones remain. Need music journalism, to shed light on the musicians, and to clue us up on acts we'd never learn about otherwise... |

difficult to get out here in japan. somewhat ironically it was their feature on japanese acid jazz back in 92/3 that first got me interested in japan..... (though the photo of monday michiru also may have helped ... )
haven't read for a bit but was keen on reading the latest interview with tawiah ... |

Sad it is ... but not really unexpected. Let's hope they will find new digital ground on the interslice.
A good while back I bought a whole bunch of Chasers through some guy in France, for practically nothing, and over the years I became an avid SNC collecter ... owning all but 3 issues spread over 2 volumes (only missing 3, 6 and 13 from the 1st volume). In fact it was only a few months ago I got hold of the magical 1st issue, for not even £5!
With its numerous reviews and interviews the whole lot is a comprehensive collection of musical history from world jazz jive and acid jazz, via drum'n'bass to nu jazz and beyond. I often find myself re-living the late nineties, with a Chaser in my hands it's fascinating to see how issue after issue you can observe this scene develope; early early talkin' loud, soul jazz, bbe ... thé rise of new talent and labels, SNC rarely missed a beat. This pile of paper is unmistakenly thé red line through my musical education for the past decade, and without a doubt thé musical reference guide for many on this board.

Beyond sad... digital is cool, but thats just not the same...
I can't think of another magazine that captures music quite like they do.

yea a real loss... it's terrible to lose a magazine like this... however, seriously though. this magazine had like the worst distribution. just maybe about two weeks ago, i finally saw the cinematic orchestra issue in the shop. of course, i picked it up. but i do know now there has been a newer issue out for like a few weeks before seeing that issue. that kind of sucks... but the articles were usually quite interesting and the smell... organic ink and think matte index paper! some people hate it but i love it. |

Jazzy Sport was always the ticket when I was living in Tokyo. Managed to pick up a bunch of back issues for 100yen each in Shibuya. Sweet!
SNC will be sadly missed. ___________________ IDM? Dust...anyone?

Nice story Yiannish (edit: heh Yiannish lol sorry Yiannis) must have a hefty pile of those considering how long the magazine was in print.
Actually I wouldn't mind reading that Carleen Anderson article... |

This saddens me. When I was first getting into this hipper music, SNC was my textbook. I learned about many new artists from the articles and ads.I loved everything about it - the design, the writing, even the texture and smell of the paper. I gladly plunked down my US$14.99 at Barnes & Noble or Borders for it before discovering I could buy it at Dusty Groove for a more reasonable $9.99. It was something to look forward to every other month or so. I hope to see an online version but it won't quite be the same.

yeah, John, that really captures a lot of it for me -- computers open up many possibilities but at this point they leave our senses behind too. I know there are lots of smart people trying to figure out how to connect computing with the world of *things* in a better way so hopefully we are in a transition to something richer. |

SNC's legacy will def live on. Much Respect to Paul Bradshaw and all the crew for the past 19-20 years. Looking forward to the new format. Yiannis: nice write up!
