"I don't know, what say, but I need ... loving, I need loving"

Of the four releases Jupiter comes with this spring, Fly is my personal favourite and right now I'm really sucked into this album. I wake up singing 'Skip', I go to bed humming 'Satellite'. I mailed Antti and Jose and we spoke about their fantastic debut album.

Fly are Antti Hynninen & Jose Mäenpää. Google tells us Antti Hynninen died around the 17th century, but "I'm fine and happily alive, so far ..." Antti answers my mail. But, it's about hard facts, numbers, charts and ... errr ... good music here at Beyondjazz, right?

Antti Hynninen is producer and saxophonist, and has released music under the name of 'Rebeat'. He's also involved in several other bands such as Q-Continuum and has been a mainstay in the Helsinki underground jazz and club scene for many years. Jose Mäenpää is a composer, vocalist and trumpet player and one of the most open minded musicians in Finland. He conducted bands related to various projects from Brazilian to Jazz and RnB/Soul for many years now. He is also a side member of the band Dalindèo.

Jose: "Antti and I hooked up together after an ordinary gig. We played together once. But we actually didn't know much about each other before that first session. Our first intention was to make another "Rebeat" deep house release featuring me on vocals. Antti had just released that 12" on Pivotal Records and was looking for new material." The collaboration turned out to be so fruitful they started a new project called 'Fly'. Jose: "That's how Fly was born. It was a long and stony road searching for a good name for our band and Fly seemed suitable enough."

What music did these two grew up with? Where is it all coming from? Jose: "I played classical trumpet as a kid and jammed with my daddy's Vox-organ at home. Actually I didn't listen to music that much that time. Always thought the music my friends listened to wasn't interesting. I did make lots of tunes with an Amiga computer though. In fact you can still find those somewhere on the net ... Aaaaarrrggh!" (Free beer for any of you who can supply us with some of those, red.) Jose: "When I later 'found' blues and jazz, I went totally crazy about it." Antti: "I used to listen to all kinds of music. Corny but true! Hip hop, soul, jazz, pop, classical ... I used to be - and I'm still - a great fan of Iron Maiden and also some rougher metal like Sepultura, Pantera etc." Never thought Iron Maiden would get name-dropped on this site, but hey this is www.beyondbeyondjazz.net right?

Right now these are some of the things in their cd-players ... Jose: "To be honest: Egberto Gismonti, Carita Holmström, Wagner's Tristan & Isolde opera, Charlie Parker with Strings." Antti: "Raphael Saadiq, Foreign Exchange, Egberto Gismonti, PlantLife ... to name a few."

Alan Brown's always been good at writing love letters, so I'll let him describe how this project sounds like: "The music is simply charming and you will find yourself subdued and overcome by the secret powers of song and substance. It is music without extravagance or embellishment, everything kept as simple and as sweet as possible, yet the songs simply soar and take you to the lofty reaches of outstanding musical emotion. Each song having angelic and benignity tones and sensations, all are harmonious; all are exhibiting equivalence and always corresponding and constitutional to each other. Each song will leave you captivated, enamoured and fascinated. In truth I could go on and on about the many emotions and senses you may experience with this sensational album." Let's do that ...

Jose: "Fly's music wants to tell stories, create an atmosphere; a serious home listening experience. We are both into so many kinds of music, but the main thing is to have soul and something to feel." As a band both Antti and Jose are responsible for how Fly sounds. Jose: "We both compose and arrange the tracks. Antti does the producing and I've written lyrics." On the album Jose does the lead and backing vocals and trumpet, while Antti does most of the coding and played sax and flute. "Oh and there's also sweet Alexandra singing backing vocals in a couple of tracks as well as many other friends playing on the album. Thanks for that, dudes!"

The album opens with 'Fairytale' which has that typical Helsinki / Ricky Tick sound. Antti: "Fairytale, the opening track, was great fun. It was a totally co-operative composition. I wrote part A of that song and gave it to Jose who continued the song by writing a B-part. The album version is a jam we did in just one take to get that jazzy feeling ... I've been playing that composition a lot with my own jazz-band." Jose: "It was made after all the other songs. It had to have that positive feeling and get you ready for the Fly kind of experience ... leading to sweet songs and lyrics." Antti: "It was an interesting proces. We wanted to have an opening track for the album. Kind of anything-can-happen-after-this-track, if you know what I mean?! The album is a lot about the stories and most of the tracks have a strong jazzvibe, so, for me the opening track is quite obvious. I didn't want to have vocals on it. Personally, I would like to have had another track without lyrics. Maybe some scatting or singing without words. Will be for the next album then ...”

I'm trying to find the secret formula to their wonderful music, but in fact I'm afraid there is none. Just true musicianship. Both: "All of the tracks have come up in a different way. ‘Skip’ was the first track we ever made together, but it has changed quite a lot since day one. Antti came up with the background, like the rhythmical idea and atmosphere and some chord changes, where Jose did melody and lyrics. Tunes like "Toys" and "You'll be Loving Me" were composed by Jose." Jose: "I had those ideas ready and Antti finished off with arranging and coding."
Usually their tracks keep changing during the production process and ideas grow along the process. "It's like an adventure. The tune just takes you there, if you try to feel what it has to say." Antti: "The wicked chord changes in 'You'll be Loving Me' came up at 3pm at night, as I was trying to get some action in it. The next morning they still sounded cool. Some of the horn arrangements were first improvised solos and then we took the best ideas and tried to create a whole new part over that. Some tunes took us a year to get finished. 'Toys' was recorded and produced in a week."
Both: "As you see there's not any sure or only way. Always have to be open for new and fresh ideas and that's what makes it interesting."

No secret formula, no master plan ... Antti: "I think nothing is very intentional in a way. We had no planning for this album at the beginning. We just did how we felt and Martsa aka Martti Heikkinen (Texicalli / Jupiter label chief, red.) got our vibe and wanted to release this album."

The last (bonus) track of the album is a 'hip hop' version of 'Satellite'. I'm interested to know which artists - alive or death - they would like to see experimenting with their songs. Antti: "I think there are lots of good remixers and producers and composers to work with, but it's not the name but how you do it. All of us have heard bad remixes from good producers just because they were made in a hurry. A good one gives a totally new conception and vision to a track. I like Madlib's way of working and his creativity."
They don't seem to go jump on the dance floor remix album wagon though. Antti: "Im not really into dancefloor remixes. Mostly they're just there because they need one on the single's b-side. Those usually sound quite boring to me."
Any more? Antti: "Maybe some of those godfathers of rnb; D'Angelo or Saadiq. Maybe Marc De Clive-Lowe or some of those West London pioneers would do interesting work ... Maybe Herbert?! Well in general I would like to hear whatever version because the surprise is the most interesting part of the remixing business. Dharma One did a remix of 'Satellite' but I haven't heard it yet. We used to be roommates ... Will have to ask next time I see him ..."

Right now they're working on getting a live band together. "Our live crew varies from time to time but usually we have Jose on vocals, Antti on sax and flute, Ville Riippa on keys, Heikki Laine on bass, Mikko Kaakkuriniemi on drums, Valtteri Pöyhönen on guitar and Janne Toivonen on trumpet. We used to have backing vocals too, but we decided to skip those for a while. If good gigs appear we'll take some with us."
"We have had a couple of gigs but everyone seems to be quite busy. Heikki and Mikko are involved in Quintessence and Q-continuum, Ville is a member of Teddy Rok 7 and Husky Rescue and Valtteri is currently working on Dalindéo. All of the Fly members have like 100 projects each. So as you can imagine, there's not so much spare time left and it's hard to get those guys in the same room at the same time. But when its happening it sounds totally cool."

If any of you promotors is reading this, pay attention. "We're looking forward to getting invited to Belgium! It would be so nice to get somewhere abroad to play ..."
Meanwhile we could go up there and visit Helsinki. "Lots of good places here in Helsinki have closed their doors recently but Rose Garden, Liberte and Pacifiko are good ones nowadays. There's the Club Bundolo night, hosted by Anna S. And Kasio from Nu Spirit, which started again in Uniq but I haven't been there yet. Good club anyway. Fly gave its first live performance in Bundolo back when it was in another bar."
"If you're staying longer you have to visit Finland's most hetero friendly gay bar Lost and Found. All of the musicians hang around there once in a while. And there's stuff like nature in Finland you know ..."

Since he's a member of Dalindéo, I ask Jose if there's any more material coming out from them in the near future. Jose: "We are going to the studio in May to do another 12" for Ricky Tick, likely coming out in autumn."
Are they working on their image too (check this post on beyondjazz)... Jose: "I had a great laugh. On my behalf I can say that I don't feel like being an entertainer under a certain brand or style. Nowadays I'm focused on doing music and on it's content. I don't mind if someone doesn't like my green cap icon_smile.gif".

Thanks Antti and Jose for the nice words and especially for the great music. Fly's self titled debut album is out soon on Jupiter Records, distributed worldwide by Soulseduction.
